Ex-Officer in Oscar Grant Case Arrested

By Loryn Wilson - Jan 14th, 2009 at 2:07 pm

According to CNN, ex-Bay Area Rrapid Transit police officer Johannes Mehserle has been arrested in connection with the shooting of Oscar Grant.

The day Oscar Grant was killed in a BART train station, he was laying face down and was shot in the back. With Mehserle’s arrest this week, we can hope that justice will be served, but we will not know until the case is over. It is possible that Mehserle could be acquitted, just as the officers in the Sean Bell case were last year.

The question on my mind–and I’m sure on the mind of others–is whether or not things will be different in this case. Only time will tell, but the record for police shootings of this nature has not been kind to the families and friends of those murdered.

The arrest of Mehserle does not mean that Oscar Grant’s case is over nor does it mean that justice will be served. It only means that we need to continue speaking out and keeping a close watch on this story as it unfolds.
