Things to Read: Interviews and Defunct Magazines
By Kay Steiger - Jan 9th, 2009 at 3:27 pmOver at Campus Progress this week we have several interesting articles. CP’s publications associate, David Spett, interviews freshman Congresswoman Kathy Dahlkemper, a pro-life Democrat from Pennsylvania. Dahlkemper said, “It’s important for me to continue to focus on young people.” Read the whole interview here.
Pushback’s Daniel Strauss takes a look back at a Chicago-based magazine that was started to compete with The New Yorker at about the same time. Strauss discovers that we can learn more from its failure than we can from the existence of the magazine itself. Read Strauss’ analysis here.
And today, after it has become public that Sanjay Gupta may, in fact, be the next surgeon general, I have an interview with Dr. Jocelyn Elders, the first surgeon general under President Clinton. She says of Gupta, “I think Dr. Gupta has been out there working very hard trying to communicate with the American people. I think he would be an excellent communicator.” But Elders also acknowledges that he may face many of the same battles that she did: promoting health care reform, fighting abstinence-only programming, and getting the public to invest in preventative care. Read the whole interview here.
