Mac’s Green Claims Conceal Poisoned Apple
By Tommaso Boggia - Jan 7th, 2009 at 11:02 amI’m not a fan of excessive consumerism, but I must admit that I have a soft spot for Apple products. This might change after seeing the way they packaged my most recent acquisition:
As you can see in the picture, Apple’s distribution center decided to package my new Airport router in a box big enough to fit two of them. Twice the amount of space = twice the number of trucks = twice the amount of carbon emissions due to transportation = twice the shipping cost that I’m burdened with.
Apple’s ridiculous (and expensive) marketing campaigns tooting its own environmental horn are meaningless unless the company actually starts cleaning up its practices. Reducing shipping waste is one of the easiest areas for companies to reduce their impact and save tons of money, way easier than making their laptops non toxic… which they aren’t yet.
Young people aren’t fooled by greenwashing, and they are mobilizing to make sustainability a priority both for businesses and politicians. On February 27th, 10,000 young people will be marching on Washington, DC to demand a power shift. Either Apple cleans up its act or it will begin to lose the demographic it relies on the most, the Greenest Generation.
