Caroline’s Patriotic Duty

By Ned Resnikoff - Dec 19th, 2008 at 1:30 pm

So it turns out that Kennedy blew off voting in 2002 and 2005. I guess if I were here right now, I would respond by making the argument that if you look at the statistical chances of her vote having any sort of influence on the election, then not voting, and instead finding a more valuable use of one’s time, is more rational. Which is technically true, after all.

Or, conversely, she could argue that she didn’t realize that political figures were selected by voting, but instead by this elaborate behind-the-scenes process in which all the candidates buy Al Sharpton dinner and deploy their influential friends to the halls of power.

I suppose it’s not Kennedy’s fault that this is how appointments to the Senate are won, but there is something weird and icky about her willingness to conduct an whole shadow campaign without even trying to make an appeal to the people of New York. Nobody’s even pretending public opinion is relevant.
