Surprise, Surprise: Obama is Time’s Person of the Year
By Loryn Wilson - Dec 17th, 2008 at 3:45 pmPolitico reports that Time Magazine has selected Barack Obama as the Person of the Year:
Time Managing Editor Richard Stengel appeared this morning on “Today” to introduce the magazine’s “Person of the Year” award. Although he tried building suspense by starting in reverse order, it’s no real surprise who won: President-elect Barack Obama.
“The Person of the Year was, in effect, invented for Barack Obama,” Stengel told Matt Lauer and Meredith Vieira. “He’s a transformational figure. He has done something extraordinary.”
I know this doesn’t surprise anyone. Of course they gave it to Barack Obama, he’s the first black president who changed some key states blue … and he deserves it. It makes me wonder who else was on the short list, or if they even had one. It might make a better, more compelling story to name someone other than the obvious choice of President-elect Obama as Person of the Year.

Runners-up: Henry Paulson, Sarah Palin, Zhang Yimou, and Nicolas Sarkozy (http://www.time.com/time/specials/2008/personoftheyear/article/0,31682,1861543_1865103,00.html, h/t http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/archives/individual/2008_12/016091.php).
