Undeserving Gay Videos Win Award
By Tanya Paperny - Dec 4th, 2008 at 12:41 pmThe Ad Council has just awarded the “That’s So Gay” PSAs with the Gold Bell Award for creative excellence, one of their highest awards for videos. Lisha posted on Pushback about these spots and readers over at Feministing seemed to agree they missed the mark.
Like I commented on Lisha’s post, I don’t think that these videos are realistic illustrations of the scenarios in which a lot of young people actually use the phrase “that’s so gay.” On top of that, the PSAs only make their point by insulting someone else in the video. Doesn’t that defeat the point?
I’m certainly happy that the Ad Council is taking on LGBT issues, but I don’t think these spots deserve the award.
Thoughts? Can you come up with some PSA that would have been better?
