Evangelical Christian Gays Looking For Long-Term Compatability are Now Covered Once They Fill Out That Weird Personality Test
By L. Russell Allen - Nov 20th, 2008 at 4:04 pmYou probably know eHarmony.com. Their commercials are everywhere. They’re the dating service that promotes itself based on compatibility and long-term commitment. They’re also notorious for making applicants take a personality test. The site is marketed toward a Christian niche: Applicants who are gay or have been divorced multiple times are excluded.
Not anymore. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that eHarmony’s operators, acting in the wake of a lawsuit filed against the site in New Jersey, have decided to allow gay members. (They also had to shell out over $50,000 to settle the lawsuit.)
Now, eHarmony had a definite legal case. So their quick capitulation makes me think that they’ve been planning on going rainbow for some time now. But, hypothetically, let’s say that eHarmony was forced to make this change. Would that be a good thing?
The answer lies in whether it’s a good thing that lawsuits against bars that have ladies’ nights or lawsuits against all-women gyms constantly thrown out. The answer lies in whether it would be acceptable for me to sue a niche dating service like JDate or Soul Singles or, most appropriately, GayMatchMaker.com and make a cool $5,000 off of it.
Either discrimination is okay or it isn’t. When some dude sues a bar for having a ladies’ night we can point and laugh because the plaintiff is usually one of those morons who claims that white, heterosexual, Christian males have it toughest because no one caters precisely to them. Which is ludicrous. What isn’t ludicrous is that those lawsuits are no different than the lawsuit that forced eHarmony to offer gay matchmaking services. We can’t have it both ways here.
I look forward to joining Curves.

You and I both. Look forward. To that.
