An Exceedingly Nerdy Anniversary

Half-Life, one of the greatest, most groundbreaking video games ever made, was released a decade ago yesterday. I’m not ashamed to say that I wasted far too many hours of my younger years on this game, which deserves praise not just for being a startlingly visceral artistic achievement, but for the degree to which it hyper-charged the DIY game-development community thanks to the welcoming attitude its developer, Valve, took toward modders, who ended up extending the game’s lifespan for, well, a decade and counting.
