Replace Bill Kristol With Someone Reasonable

By Daniel Strauss - Nov 19th, 2008 at 10:25 am

Oh please let it happen, please let Bill Kristol’s contract expire soon. Word is that’s what’s going to happen. But wait! There’s more! Kristol’s column would most likely not be filled by a liberal, but rather by a conservative. New York Times Editorial Page Editor Andrew Rosenthal would save himself the astronomical costs in aspirin for fighting the headaches brought about by reasonably annoyed readers if he picked someone sensible.

Jeff Bercovici posted a poll of who would actually be a good replacement should Kristol leave (please oh please oh please) and I couldn’t be happier with the result: it’s Ross Douthat! Out of 4,116 votes, Douthat got 44 percent, Peggy Noonan and Kathleen Parker (formerly of the National Review) were tied at 20 percent,  and Mike Murphy got 10%.

As I’m writing this fellow Pushbacker Ned Resnikoff has shared that John Cole of Balloon Juice thinks Daniel Larison would be a good replacement. Personally, I don’t think Larison has the right tone for the Times page (not that I do either) but I sure as hell would be fine with Larison sharing office space with the other Times columnists. Kevin Drum asks his readers who might be good and one of the commenters has another fine proposal: Greg Mankiw.
