Buy American

New York, London, Paris, Milan–four fashion capitals, only one them in America. But there’s something that’s happening to more casual styles–maybe you’ve seen it in some of the photos I’ve been posting for Fashion in the Wild, maybe you’ve noticed it elsewhere. I’ve been reading blogs like PTLDME and A Continuous Lean lately, and with the full-throated return of plaid to our wardrobes, something else is becoming apparent: classic American style is back.
I’m not talking about cowboy boots or coonskin hats; this style revival is more 1950s lumberjack meets Jackie O, and the trend is already in full swing. Shopping at a thrift store last weekend, a friend told me I was the last person to jump on the plaid train, and I must admit I may be slightly late to the party. But with the Obamas seemingly about to usher a new era of style into the White House, the time has never been more ripe to get back to some classic, albeit updated, American designs. That’s why I’m so excited about a list that A Continuous Lean put out yesterday.
Called The American List, it’s a great collection of American-made apparel and accessories. Some of my favorites include Woolrich, Band of Outsiders, and Spurr.
Seriously, though, check out the whole list. Some of it’s tough to find, but well worth it. And the satisfaction you’ll get from buying American? Almost as good as the satisfaction you’ll get from looking great.
