Mirror’s Edge Looks Nice, but I’m Still Waiting for an Engrossing Curling Simulator
By Jesse Singal - Nov 12th, 2008 at 12:04 pmI’m fascinated by the new game Mirror’s Edge, which shipped yesterday for Playstation 3 and XBox 360, and which will come out for PC later as well. Though the game has gotten good, not great, reviews, it nonetheless marks an undeniable leap forward for video games.
Check out this gameplay trailer. This is a different style from anything we’ve seen before:
We’re coming closer and closer to the point where technology will no longer be a limitation for video-game developers. The fact that developer DICE just pulled off what is in large part a first-person parkour simulator–and appears to have effectively captured many elements of a unique, recently developed sport that few will ever try in real life–is pretty amazing.
While the latest tech certainly doesn’t in and of itself make for good games, it does allow developers to stretch their legs a little and try to incoporate features and styles that would have been difficult or impossible to accomplish even just a couple years ago.

Good call on the awesomeness of Mirror’s Edge. Clearly I’m revealing myself as quite the dork by saying this, but I’ve been looking forward to this game for quite awhile now.
