See: Open Source Execution Documents

By Diana Jou - Nov 11th, 2008 at 5:15 pm

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) has opened their records on executed offenders and people on death row. The majority are Blacks (40 percent), then whites (29 percent), then Hispanics (27 percent). The TDCJ scanned and entered execution documents that include details of the offender´s charge, last statements, occupation, date of offense and date of execution. For me the scanned pictures and documents are a powerful tool in humanizing the criminal justice system. To see the scheduled executions is sobering; tomorrow George H. Whitaker III will die.

Wow, Diana. This is a rare glimpse into a penal system that prevents us from looking too closely at what actually takes place behind cinderblock walls, for fear that we would find it too unsettling to allow it to continue.
