Studs Terkel Dies at 96
By Emily Rutherford - Oct 31st, 2008 at 8:15 pmOne of the greatest figures of Americana died at his home in Chicago today. Studs Terkel was famous for his oral histories of America–most notably Working, a 1974 record of dozens of Americans talking about their diverse jobs. He hosted a radio show for much of his life, in addition to writing 18 books, the most recent of which just came out this year. For more about Terkel’s life, the Chicago Tribune’s obit is definitely worth a read.
Ever since I was the CEO in the musical adaptation of Working back in 8th grade, Terkel’s work as a reporter–perhaps not in the traditional sense of the word, but a reporter nonetheless–has been instrumental to my understanding of how the diverse elements of American culture make up the all-too-clichéd melting pot. Without question, his full career deserves celebration.
