Elizabeth Edwards on Health Care
By Kay Steiger - Oct 28th, 2008 at 6:02 pmLast night Campus Progress, our sister organization, sponsored a wonkarific discussion on health care between Ezra Klein and Elizabeth Edwards. The full video can be viewed below, but it’s more than an hour long. We hope to have an update with a highlights video soon.
Elizabeth Edwards considers health care reform a “moral imperative,” and she noted that she was pleasantly surprised to hear Barack Obama in the second presidential debate say that health care is a right. Obama’s plan does not include a mandate–something that Edwards’ husband and Hillary Clinton included in their proposed health care reform plans.
But Edwards was critical of John McCain’s plan as well, saying that he’s abandoned some of his more sensible reforms in favor of rhetoric accusing liberals of trying to enact “socialized” medicine.
Throughout the evening Edwards encouraged people to look at the big picture, like investment in preventative care for diseases like diabetes. Left untreated, diabetes can lead to blindness, amputation, or kidney damage. Even if preventative measures seem like a big investment up front, they do amount to savings in the long term.
