SNL Removes Offensive (and Boring) Skit from Website

By Rob Anderson - Oct 8th, 2008 at 11:35 am

On Monday, I argued that a skit on Saturday Night Live last weekend was in poor taste because it suggested rich, powerful, money grubbing, Democrat-supporting Jews are behind our economic crisis and that a specific family, the Sandlers, should be executed because of their role in the mess. I thought that was a bit anti-Semitic.

It looks like the producers of the show may have agreed with me. NBC removed the skit from its website earlier this week, and then reposted an edited version of it. A spokesman for the company said it just “didn’t meet [their] standards.”

I fail to see how it was anti-Semitic. Offensive yes (but then so was the vote for the bailout), but not anti-Semitic. The skit never brought up their being Jewish and as for the “People That Should Be Shot” line, my read was that it was for their behaviour in the financial situation, something completely unrelated to their ethnicity.

In fact, I would think you all might agree that the sentiment was proper, just too extreme, since it was lampooning them for the greed that is so often highlighted as the cause of all evil in society on Pushback and other progressive blogs.

the caricature of the sandlers and of soros very obviously played up stereotypically “Jewish” behaviors. you don’t have to have a sign that says “THESE PEOPLE ARE JEWISH” for that message to be clear.

For what it’s worth, watching the skit I never would have known they were intended to be Jewish. Perhaps my understanding of “stereotypically Jewish behaviours” is radically off-base or outside the mainstream, but I think there’s a bit more being read into here than was intended.
